Blackheath and Bramley Choral Society had pleasure in presenting their Christmas concert.
The Christmas Oratorio was written in 1734 by Bach to form part of his cycle of Cantatas for the Lutheran Church Year. The Oratorio is in fact six Cantatas to tell the Christmas story sung on separate days (The three days of Christmas 25/26/27th December, New Year's Day, Sunday after the New Year and Epiphany 6 January).
We sang three of the Cantatas describing the birth of Christ, the shepherds and the Magi.
In addition we sang two further Cantatas from the Christmas period - No 61 for the opening of the church year on the first Sunday in Advent, and No 140 (Sleepers awake!) for the last Sunday in the year immediately preceding.
